I understand the rules of the comp but i think it would have been wiser to suggest a main title, with this title making sure there's not enough hi-res material around for it.......... then you get the best out of the artists who's ideas really shine.......like the comp over at euphoric not so long ago they chose the lord of the flies and there was some amazing styles and variations of dvd covers that turned up from that comp.
When stating it must be a dvd title pre 2000 you may end up with designs which are thrown together because of the hi-res material available for them, the whole object of a competition is to make the artists think and come up with something very origional.
Well imo, if you class yourself as one of the better artists, then choose an older title, it you are a relative newbie and not very confident then choose a newer title, that way it will tax everybody's expertise. The judges that do the judging will be aware of everybody's limitations, so I feel this might be an idea to consider

Demon. I agree with what you are saying, but I was doing this particular competition for all levels. Next, I am planning on doing a contest just for artists, with a public vote. Then we will have a particular title, as you are more skilled. I didn't want to make it too difficult for some of the lesser skilled members. As it is though, it is pretty tough. You can't use any poster image larger than 640x435, which limits cut and pasting. If we get a cover that is lots of small images thrown together, the judges aren't going to rate it. Judging will be based on creativity, imagination, skill etc.
I agree Bazzah didn't really think of the less skilled but then again i wouldn't say i'm that skilled either i just try not to use poster-art at all. Even then it takes me awhile to finish cover because i like to try different things with each cover and look for tutorials on the web for effects i may wanna plan.
Best way of learning Demon. I didn't even know how to fill a square 2 years ago, but after searching the new, and a lot of experimenting, I know it pretty well!
And I would have to disagree about you not being skilled. You wouldn't have been so welcomed into the artist group if you weren't skilled.
Before this gets going Bazzah you should really tell us what cover we should do, it's highly unfair on everyone to say do what youl ike. All the successful competitions I have seen have run in the way that the top guy has specified a film, covers have gone in and the judges have decided.
At least if we are all doing the same cover its not so bias.
The fact that you can only use certani sized images is going to make it difficult. Also, the fact that there must not be a custom already makes it VERY difficult. You find a cover that isnt in the gallery, that has got a lot of material available. I think you will be surprised how tough the competition will be.
The judging won't be done according to what the movie is anyway. The judging will be about the skill and imagination that is used.

I think the way you have it now is more than fair. It will be hard enough to find source materials, especially if you can't use one that already has a gallery custom done. Sounds like fun to me! (IMG:http://www.hirescovers.net/forum/style_emoticons/default/thumb.gif)
bugger had a great idea for a cover, until i realised that you said it cant have a custom cover in the galley already.might still make it anyway...for fun.
on that point, this rule should only apply to cutoms uploaded previous to today,it would be horrendous to work on a cover, then in a couple of weeks when your about to upload it ,someone posts one in the gallery, disqualifying your hard work.
i'll have a go,(but dont expect to win next to some of the great artists on here )
It must be a movie cover. For more information, please see the first post of this thread. All entries must be submited to admin@hirescovers.net by 31st July. And entries not adhering to the competition rules, will be disqualified! Now get making those covers!!
We don't seem to have many contenders at the moment. If you are joining in the competition, and have not said so already, please can you let me know. This is who we have so far.

A couple questions for clarification- Is the use of poster art to be limited to 20% for each poster or 20% for all posters total for the cover? Entries must not be of a movie for which a custom is already in the gallery. Is this the new gallery only, or the archive gallery as well?
