I understand the rules of the comp but i think it would have been wiser to suggest a main title, with this title making sure there's not enough hi-res material around for it.......... then you get the best out of the artists who's ideas really shine.......like the comp over at euphoric not so long ago they chose the lord of the flies and there was some amazing styles and variations of dvd covers that turned up from that comp.
When stating it must be a dvd title pre 2000 you may end up with designs which are thrown together because of the hi-res material available for them, the whole object of a competition is to make the artists think and come up with something very origional.
Well imo, if you class yourself as one of the better artists, then choose an older title, it you are a relative newbie and not very confident then choose a newer title, that way it will tax everybody's expertise. The judges that do the judging will be aware of everybody's limitations, so I feel this might be an idea to consider

Demon. I agree with what you are saying, but I was doing this particular competition for all levels. Next, I am planning on doing a contest just for artists, with a public vote. Then we will have a particular title, as you are more skilled. I didn't want to make it too difficult for some of the lesser skilled members. As it is though, it is pretty tough. You can't use any poster image larger than 640x435, which limits cut and pasting. If we get a cover that is lots of small images thrown together, the judges aren't going to rate it. Judging will be based on creativity, imagination, skill etc.
I agree Bazzah didn't really think of the less skilled but then again i wouldn't say i'm that skilled either i just try not to use poster-art at all. Even then it takes me awhile to finish cover because i like to try different things with each cover and look for tutorials on the web for effects i may wanna plan.
Best way of learning Demon. I didn't even know how to fill a square 2 years ago, but after searching the new, and a lot of experimenting, I know it pretty well!
And I would have to disagree about you not being skilled. You wouldn't have been so welcomed into the artist group if you weren't skilled.
Before this gets going Bazzah you should really tell us what cover we should do, it's highly unfair on everyone to say do what youl ike. All the successful competitions I have seen have run in the way that the top guy has specified a film, covers have gone in and the judges have decided.
At least if we are all doing the same cover its not so bias.
The fact that you can only use certani sized images is going to make it difficult. Also, the fact that there must not be a custom already makes it VERY difficult. You find a cover that isnt in the gallery, that has got a lot of material available. I think you will be surprised how tough the competition will be.
The judging won't be done according to what the movie is anyway. The judging will be about the skill and imagination that is used.

I think the way you have it now is more than fair. It will be hard enough to find source materials, especially if you can't use one that already has a gallery custom done. Sounds like fun to me! (IMG:http://www.hirescovers.net/forum/style_emoticons/default/thumb.gif)
bugger had a great idea for a cover, until i realised that you said it cant have a custom cover in the galley already.might still make it anyway...for fun.
on that point, this rule should only apply to cutoms uploaded previous to today,it would be horrendous to work on a cover, then in a couple of weeks when your about to upload it ,someone posts one in the gallery, disqualifying your hard work.
i'll have a go,(but dont expect to win next to some of the great artists on here )
It must be a movie cover. For more information, please see the first post of this thread. All entries must be submited to admin@hirescovers.net by 31st July. And entries not adhering to the competition rules, will be disqualified! Now get making those covers!!
We don't seem to have many contenders at the moment. If you are joining in the competition, and have not said so already, please can you let me know. This is who we have so far.

A couple questions for clarification- Is the use of poster art to be limited to 20% for each poster or 20% for all posters total for the cover? Entries must not be of a movie for which a custom is already in the gallery. Is this the new gallery only, or the archive gallery as well?
I mean is the use of poster art to be 20% of the total cover no matter how many posters are used, or can each poster used be 20% of the cover(so say 3 different posters used could comprise 60% of the cover)?
I havent read the rules, but count me in Bazzah. I am glad to see irrob isnt as I cant compete with him at this moment in time.
But I have a feeling that the winner will be one of the lesser known on the circuit which will inspire others to have the courage to enter the next comp.
Hi chefjoe, if you check the post proper, you'll see that bazzah isn't entering or judging the competition, and Skally and Lulu are only judging the entrants... (lol)
Can you please explain what the covers should be judged on. ie.. originality, ability to capture the "theme" of the movie in the cover, ability to make it look retail.. etc.. etc.
Lol thats my problem i picked a movie where there wasn't no hi-res material at all and now i've started it i must finish it so this is where my creative and imagination talents are gonna come in and then be proud to call it a complete custom (IMG:http://www.hirescovers.net/forum/style_emoticons/default/8824.gif) .
Well Im out... just saw the pre-2000 DVD-release so.... the movie I made was released much earlier but didnt release on DVD until 2001 apparantly. So i withdraw...
Edit: im back in action.... found an earlier release.... phew
I would say the minimum size allowable would a be a Thin Pack Single, (if this is incorrect am sure Bazzah or someone will correct this) as for the resolution use 300dpi.
In my blondeness i seem to be confussed in a big way Is it a Pre 2000 movie as in a movie released before 2000 Or what if it was a 1995 movie that was not released on DVD until 2005 is it still classed as a pre 2000 movie or not Now when some one answers this please write it in laymans terms I dont have any trouble understanding them or a simple Yes or No I will be able to understand Sorry for being a stubbie short of a six pack Cheers (IMG:http://www.hirescovers.net/forum/style_emoticons/default/8824.gif)
What? That's BS. Do you know how few movies was released on dvd before 2000? Dvds weren't really that big then cause the players were freaking expensive. I don't really see the point in this rule. I can understand if you want covers for movies that had there theatrical release before 2000 because you don't see that many of those. But I can make a cover for a movie from the 30's that no one else has made anything for, but still it doesn't comply with the rules cause the movie company only just released it this year.
if this is the rule, then I can't join in on the compitition.
Hi everybody. I still don't get about the 20% of the total cover size. If i wanna put the faces of the actors, i have to put without a doubt a picture, unless i draw them (seems really hard). And if wanna put things, i don't know, like cars, planes, guns, etc, I can't put images of those things? If i use images i'm gonna be over than 20%. I would really appreciate if you could clear it up to me. (IMG:http://www.hirescovers.net/forum/style_emoticons/default/chin.gif)

I'm back in the game! Got a new idea. Today a gonna upload my first cover for this competition in "Show off" since it was released on DVD in early 2000.

A quick question if i may, what if a film has multiple release dates? i wanted to do one that was originally released in 1999 by one studio and then released years later by another. Will that be ok cheers for anyone that can help....
You can check release dates at two places: DVD Empire and Amazon.com/DVD My question: will the public get a higher res preview to go by than what is currently in the blogs?
Quick question. What if there is a cover on this site for the movie you want to make, but it is a foreign cover, is it okay to add an english cover to the comp?

Not if it is a custom. If there is only a scan for the cover you want to do, then it is fine. I am hoping that we are going to get some customs that we don't have. This way the competition benefits everyone (IMG:http://www.hirescovers.net/forum/style_emoticons/default/winking.gif)

Sorry, just getting a bit frustrated with my 5 attempts at covers for the comp. 3 Have been ruled out coz i didn't release it was dvd release date, 1 has been ruled out because when i first searched the gallery i did beatlejuice as 2 words not one, and when i found my error theres already a bloody custom, and my last cover just went the way of the dodo when PSP crashed on me. So i reiterate ARGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think I'm in. finally found a pre 2000 release that inspired me, AND without a custom already made, which is weird since it's a pretty popular movie.
As discussed with the artists, this is how the judging will be done.
Each judge will judge each cover based on the following:
1. (Marks out of 25) How original is the work? Does it resemble any custom or retail covers already made? 2. (Marks out of 25) Quality of design. How much thought has been put into the layout? 3. (Marks out of 25) Quality of images. Are the images of high quality? Some images are hard to get hold of for older images, but have they tried to compensate this with using effects? 4. (Marks out of 25) Movie 'feel' captured? Have they captured the feel for the movie?
Then, they will submit to me, a total out of 100 for each cover. The 3 covers with the total highest scores from all the judges will be the winners.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK Only a few more days to go, i better get a rush on my effort if it's gonna be in on time. If not they'll be a new cover for the gallery in a week or so anyway hehe.
LOL, I just sent mine in. Hope it doesnt suck. Good luck to all. Anyone know if all the standings will be posted or just the top 3? To be honest, if I were to make the top ten I'd be pretty impressed. Just wondering.

I think it's just the top 3 but don't know for sure?

MOTHER F*CKER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH LOOKS LIKE I'M OUT OF THE COMP!!!!!!!
I spent hours searching for a high res image, couldn't find one so i've spent literally weeks of pain staking vector modelling to recreate it. I've now done and to my bloody dismay someone else has already created a cover using a high res version of what i was tying to recreate (looks like a high res scan of the replica map i was using as a template). So that's it, i throw in my hat. Seems like fate was against me on this as i've had nothing but disaster after disaster. Good luck to everyone else, i'll be back for the next, but if i never have to use the bloody pen tool for the rest of my life i'll die happy.
I don't see why you don't post your version, just because someone else has a hi-res copy of something and your rebuilding the same thing doesn't mean to say there's will be better, unless it's because your doing the same movie, and if that's the case it doesn't matter, post anyway.
It's not been posted on here, it's been posted on a certain region one only site. The reason i'm not gonna enter anymore is that, lets say 90% of my cover is made up of this map, and the other cover is made completely from the map. Therefore by the juding critera i have lost nearly 25 points from the onset, for originality, or in my case, lack of it. I could have kept this cover under my hat and entered anyway but i feel gutted by the others existance. It was uploaded by 'unkown' and looks like a quick cut and paste cover, using a awesome scan (far superior to my efforts) but is almost indentical to mine. I'll upload it to the gallery but i don't think it can go in the comp as an original entry anymore.
This was my 5th attempt mate. This comp gave me something to work towards at least and got me making covers again. I think i'll just resign from the comp and when i finish em off post em in the gallery

Powers. Just enter it anyway. It doesn't matter, you won't lose on originality, if you can see the work is done by you. The judges aren't going to be that tight!!! Just enter it anyway, you have nothing to lose!!!!!
the excisting cover you speak of is of questionable quality, a good vectorised weathered version with a better title treatment for this movie would be nice.
hold on UBL m8...........................i want powers in as well................even, if it's just to see what masterpiece he has come up with..................but, rules is rules...................if there is an existing cover...............then, there is an existing cover (IMG:http://www.hirescovers.net/forum/style_emoticons/default/chin.gif)
just a little extra point.....................should we include the retail version to assist with voting?
another small point.....................should vector art, free-hand art and cover-art have differing voting critera?
i actually enjoy drawing freehand and have adapted it to a couple of my covers...............notably the Hulk. but, it is time consuming and never seems to merit the effort!

The cover which is spoken upon does not reside in this realm. Therefore no rules art broken. Though the pleasure of creation be dimmered with the excistens of the anomaly. The lamant of Powers the Alchemist be cognize in my mind.
your right baz.........................for me it makes no difference............win or lose....................i just like to see the interpretation.....................most of the stuff that comes up is crap (Ooops sorry).............but, every-so -often you see brillance...................and that's what i enjoy....................i cannot produce it..............but, i just like to see it (IMG:http://www.hirescovers.net/forum/style_emoticons/default/8834.gif)
[img]I love your freehand, as I remember the Flightplan cover you made lol.gif
We need not ditch anything. Just add an alternative section within your own blog or RCA. thumb.gif[/img]
krafty m8......................i am not a blog kinda guy................i like to be in the middle with everyone else........it works a s a great learning curve.......................all i am interested in is creating "art-work"................good or bad it's what i enjoy doing.
I have been doing this seriously for 12 months now.....................and i cannot begin to tell you that the learning curve for me has been huge..................i look at "real art" sites and think...............JEEZ...................am i crap or what. Then suddenly you get a "powers" thrown at you..........................and you think to yourself, i wanna do that........so of you again..........................learning (IMG:http://www.hirescovers.net/forum/style_emoticons/default/8834.gif)
I'm just gutted with the cover and frankly have no love for it anymore. It feels like i ran a marathon and just as i was about to cross the line someone ran upto me and booted me in the balls then ran off with the finshing line. I'm still not entering it but i will up it to the gallery, and you never know, i may knock up something in the few days left.
Just a reminder - you have until tomorrow (Monday 31st July) midnight GMT to send me your entries.
Also, can everyone who has sent me a cover please send me either an email or pm with what covers you have sent? I had a bit of a meltdown the other day, and lost almost all my stuff on my PC, including my backup drive.

jeez.....................35 covers and not a single dud amongst them..................i am truly amazed by just how high a quality they all are.................a big well done to all the entrants. (IMG:http://www.hirescovers.net/forum/style_emoticons/default/thumb.gif)
i got a problem with how the voting may go ..................... cos there are so many covers which are equally good...................maybe, a genre bracket or something...............but, i guess it's a little late for that.
Congrats to the winners all of them looked very good. On a side note good job judges couldnt have been easy ................ You guys picked the same I would have for first.
Well, all winners have expressed how they wish to donate their winnings to the site. It just shows what a great community it is we have here. It's a pleasure to be an admin of such a great site, full of great people. And as a bonus, we have great cover artists! What more could we ask for??
Thanks again to everyone who spent their time participating in the competition, and to those that took the time to judge the entries. I am very impressed with all the entries.

Couldn't agree more with you Bazzah...excellent community we have here. Proud to be a part of it in my little way. Sure am glad I found this place!! Just finished uploading all my comp entries, for anyone who's interested (IMG:http://www.hirescovers.net/forum/style_emoticons/default/8824.gif)
I would like to say a BIG thank you to one, who, so far has been over-looked. Bazzah has done a great job of actually organising the comp and making sure things went to plan. He has put a lot of time and energy into answering lots of questions and also creating the previews so we could all see the entrants work. Big kudos to you my friend.
