So I'm taking my 1st steps to designing a cover and have already hit a snag. The cover image I've chosen isn't exactly the right ratio so I've ended up with quite a large border. I don't know if there's any way to fix the ratio or whether I'll just have to fill it in with colours/patterns that match the rest of the image. I could probably afford to resize it a little more and cut a bit more off the edges without losing too much of the image though. Love this alternate movie poster.

I would fill the white with the same grey grunge background of the poster. If you add your own that fills the front, you can then mask the poster to fit your own grunge background. You will also need to remove the credits.

I think what you have at the moment looks fine as it is

Cool thanks. I guess those weren't bad ideas then. That's pretty much what I was thinking, just filling in the sides with some of the same colours. Just thought I'd check in case there was any way to modify the image further. Yeah I was going to remove the credits and just fill them in with the corresponding colour.
Thanks Sauron. Appreciate it, particularly since I'm completely new to this.

maybe something like this..

you could add the scatter effect back in or grunge up the background to your hearts content

I would get rid of the text borders and the text (like in stampes example). You could also do something similar to what Fidi does with his covers, he has grunge edges on the sides of the artwork, it's not easy pulling it off as well as he does tho. Another route could be to cutout the artwork and create a background (city maybe) in similar style as the poster artwork.

Ah I like that one with the border Stampe. I didn't check back here in a few hours and ended up going down a slightly different route before I saw these suggestions. Initially i was happy with it but now I realise that filling in too much of the grey has made it look.....well a bit crap! I should have definitely went with Stampe's approach or changed the background (still reading through the tutorial and trying to figure out photoshop functions though).
At least it looks a bit better with the credits removed

Also took off that ugly-a$$ "how to watch a movie in 3D" banner part off the back. Still need to take the new line logo off too. Also: I realise that the line where the grey begins on the left isn't exactly aligned correctly that was the point where I thought I'd wrecked it a bit and decided to post my progress

I like the city background idea, and as said you can grunge it up as much as you like

Thanks for all the feedback on my first project. Will try to get back to it this weekend. Just got a new 4K HDR TV today so have spent most of the morning getting it set up/moving stuff around the living room. Will get back to photoshopping shortly.
