I've been thinking about a monthly label competition for a while - so I thought I'd put this teaser out there and see what kind of feedback you have for me. Please, let me know if you are interested in this, and what you think of the ideas I have listed below.

General:
I was thinking of a themed competition, just like HRC. The rules would stay the same each month, and only the theme would change.

Rules:
1) Absolutely no poster art or key art is allowed. Stills and un-touched promotional photos only. Any other non-movie specific artwork is fair game.
2) Absolutely no official Title Treatments. Not even "recreating" an official TT. This is to promote creativity.

I like the idea, but I doubt I'd participate given those guidelines and limitations.

To be honest (and this has been something that has been bothering me for a while now), I don't understand this whole "no TT's/no poster art make the cover better" mentality that some people seem to be using to judge a cover. While I think it's certainly impressive and creative if somebody can make something out of nothing (and I mean absolutely no disrespect to the many designers who can do this and do it so incredibly well), I feel it's becoming a standard criterion for judging covers here, which I think is unfair to those designers (myself included) that take a poster (or elements from a poster) and TT and take it to the next level.

If the rules of a special competition state "no official posters and TT's," then that's fine and I think that it can be a fun challenge and it certainly forces us to be more creative. But I fear that this mentality is seeping over into other competitions where those rules and restrictions do not apply.

Again, no offense intended to anyone, but I think a good cover is a good cover, no matter where the elements used to create it come from.

But maybe I'm in the minority here.

I would, however, be interested in a Label of the Month competition run in a similar fashion to the Label of the Year (or Cover of the Month) comp. Users nominate labels (theirs or someone elses) that were added to the gallery that month, and everyone votes (I'd even relax the rule of it having to go through WIP like the Cover of the Month, since really... how many people make WIP's just for a label?). Kylumi's competitions and the HRC are fun and create challenges, but I don't see why we can't just do a label comp where anything goes and everyones labels are capable of being nominated.

Sorry for my long-winded two cents (I do that a lot). :D :D :D

Thanks for the feedback Kernie.

a comp for labels would be good - why should people who make labels be excluded from comps because they dont make covers

and well said Kernie - not everyone has the skill, and such limits stop a lot of people from participating

Well said kernie,

Although i almost always try to make a custom front and TT, i think there's nothing wrong with using a good peace of posterart or TT as long as you try and make something original with it :)

I also feel more for a COTM kind of voting (without the wip part) then a comp to created a new label.
Personaly when i make a label its always to match my cover and i don't see myself making a label and then do a matching cover (its a bit the world upside down to me :D )

Comp level covers have always been a different breed of animal. That's why guys like dweez and kylumi deservedly win often. For comps I personally vote for covers that bring something new to the table. In other words, I want to see an artist take stills and convince me it's poster art. As far as competitions are concerned the less derivative, the better the chance of winning.

I totally agree with both kernie and voe, we have such a thing as a "Label designer" yet they don't get any recognition, at least a label of the month would give them that opportunity. As far as COM, this one needs fixing, but that's another thread.

I'd be in for a label comp and agree with a lot of what has been said. However the recognition of winning a competition isn't that important to me. I get enough recongition from the nice comments people leave in the gallery.
