Anyone watch WW84 yet? For the sheer novelty of being able to watch a major studio film on release day from the comfort of my home, I checked it out. I'm curious to know what others thought of it. I have my own feelings, but I don't want to spoil anything by talking about it if not many others have seen it yet.

I watched it Christmas night and again boxing day with the missus, thoroughly enjoyed the film apart from a couple of short scenes close to the end that left me feeling a bit meh about there decision, but well worth a watch in my opinion

My fiancee absolutely *loved* the first movie, to the point that we signed up for HBO Max to watch WW84 on Christmas day. I was thoroughly bored the whole time, and found it unnecessarily long. I looked over for her reaction, which was simply a blank expression and a very disappointed "I didn't like it".

Was my reaction as well, really like the first, barely made it through the last one...

To each their own, but I thought WW84 was a real mess. I liked the first Wonder Woman, but felt it was also overly long with poor pacing and weak villains. Those problems were certainly not rectified with this sequel.

Some quick thoughts, which I will place in spoiler tags...

Spoiler Block
- No need to set the film in 1984. The themes of greed and excess could also apply to 2020. The film took very little advantage of 80's nostalgia, to the point where it was a pointless backdrop for the story.

- The Dreamstone was a lame plot device with unclear rules. The entire climax hinged on everyone in the world changing their minds. Pedro Pascal did the best he could with the poor script he was given.

- While it was nice to see Chris Pine back, as he was arguably the best performance in both WW films... his return was odd to say the least. Why did the Dreamstone have to bring him back in someone else's body? Why do Diana and Steve have no issues with using this man's body however they see fit?

- Diana just remembers she has the power to turn things invisible? Steve is somehow able to pilot modern aircrafts because he knows how to fly a WWI biplane?

- Cheetah was wasted. I normally dislike Kristen Wiig but she wasn't the problem here. She was the "meek person becomes the villain" cliche that we've seen countless times before (Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman, Jim Carrey's Riddler, Jamie Foxx's Electro, etc.) with the typical "villain finally looks like the villain by Act 3" trope. Cheetah was poorly designed and poorly lit (to hid the poor design) and was defeated far too easily.

- Wonder Woman's gold "Asteria" armor was unnecessary. It would have been great if Diana had to "earn" it somehow... like Aquaman did in his film or even how Thor had to prove he was worthy to wield Mjolnir at the end of the first film. But instead... she just sort of has it. She found it at some point. We don't know where or how she got it. She just has it sitting there in a storage room waiting to use it.

- Major inconsistencies with Wonder Woman's appearances in the first film, BvS, and Justice League. Wasn't she supposed to have been "hiding out" since WWI (why not stop the mall robbery in a less conspicuous outfit)? Why did she also forget that she could fly in BvS and JL?

- The mid-credits scene with Asteria played by Lynda Carter was cute, but really corny. She literally looks at the camera and winks.

- Gal Gadot is stunningly beautiful but her acting (while improving) still struggles to carry an entire feature film.

- The first red flag came when I saw the "written by" credits in the opening scene. Story by and written by Geoff Johns and Patty Jenkins. Geoff Johns can (debatably) write comic books, but he doesn't know how to write a screenplay. They're two different mediums and they don't always translate. Patty Jenkins can write and direct a screenplay, but she doesn't seem to fully understand the comic book genre, at least not enough to avoid using so many of its cliches. As Warner Bros often does, Patty Jenkins also seemed to learn the wrong lessons from her success on the first film.

I didn't hate the movie. In fact, I wanted to like it. There's some good moments here and there, but they're surrounded in a sea of nonsensical and cringey moments.

If there's any consolation, it's that I'm glad I was able to watch WW84 at home without spending $20-30 to see it in theaters.

It nicely sums up all my problems with the film, plus highlighted a few others in detail that I had noticed but not given much thought too... in so far as why I was bugged by this or that.

Thanks for doing this write up, it was a pleasant read.

I do like seeing how other folks views align with my own and in this case we are very much on the same page.
