A slight texture could bring it to life, but I really like the white background, and would be sad to see it gone and/or obscured by other elements. I think the white border gives your artwork class!

The composition's looking better with the added characters. Something about the upper-right just isn't sitting right though. If you can find a couple shots of a flyer seen from below (or maybe just repeat the same one a couple times - you could get away with it), have three or four of them flying upward out of the frame.
Woola looks better than before, but the leg coming off the frame still looks awkward; try seeing how it looks if you place the frame border over him and cut off the arm entirely. You still get most of the head and can plainly tell what character he is as a result.
Also, I just don't think the yellow title text and the JCM logo are fitting in here. Were it me, I'd just make the title a single line of text, in a dark color, across the top the composition, small-sized font but widely spaced.
