I'd say give the Whiplash coil more of a curl like a cat's tail, and have it pass behind Loki and in front of Red Skull.

Thanks SXS and NR for the whip suggestions... I'm not happy with it at the moment either. Needs more work... :D

On a side note, I just reserved my tickets to see a matinee of The Avengers on May 5th, while drinking a Dr. Pepper with Captain America and an ad for the Avengers on the can. And it just hit me how surreal this is... we're actually getting an Avengers movie.

As a comic fan since about age 10, this is something that I always dreamt of but never thought it would actually happen. I always felt that the only way that an Avengers (or Justice League) film would work was if the heroes were established in solo films leading up to the crossover, as it would be tough for mainstream audiences to understand who everyone was. I doubt I was the only one who thought this, and obviously Marvel knew it themselves or listened to the fans.

However, I still had my doubts. Even when Nick Fury showed up after the credits of Iron Man, I remained skeptical that Marvel could pull this off. As hopeful and optimistic as I tried to be, I was certain that something would derail the train to Avengers... for instance, if Iron Man 2, Thor, or Captain America flopped, then Paramount or Marvel would pull the plug. Fortunately, each film was a modest success and Avengers stayed on course... and I'm amazed.

Not only are we actually getting an Avengers movie, but it sounds like this is only the beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I'm trying to remain as spoiler-free as possible leading up to May 5th, but it's hard not to hear the rumors, and it will be interesting to see how it all pans out.

Either way, I'm just taking a moment to marvel (pun intended) at the fact that there is a collection of films out there that feature these classic superheroes existing in the same universe as one another. It's pretty awesome when you think about what Marvel has done here, it's something that has never really happened in the history of cinema... and it's a pure thrill for that 10-year-old comic fan that still exists deep down in my heart.

Reflection over. :D :D

Great comments above kernie, feel the same way, and just to add to that, there's now a whole new generation loving these superheroes from Marvel and the movies of course.
I've been fan of Thor, Iron Man and Captain America, now my son is too, Marvel have done a great IMO :)

TRULY AMAZING work so far Kernie, just wonderful!! I need to start by saying that this thread is what has finally gotten me to post, hello everyone!

I TOTALLY get that you are happy with the front and as others have pointed out you only need to please yourself and not every nit-picker on the board. I'm a designer and have been using Photoshop in my day job for almost 15 years so I know how 'design by committee' can really kill a design.

That being said I've spent almost two hours reading through this thread and I do have some questions and some small suggestions but of course none of these suggestions need to be done, I'm just throwing them out there cause I want to contribute/help if I can.

Questions:
Why did you opt it have Jane Foster way up front as opposed to Nick fury who seems to be a major player?

Did you consider adding the new Stark tower in the back ground? I just thought it looked pretty cool and thought it might have been a nice touch.

Suggestions:
Especially since this is a 'good guys' front cover, shouldn't War Machine's eyes and chest piece NOT be red? Per Iron Man 2 I thought they only glowed red when the suit was being controlled by Whiplash, but maybe I am wrong?

I like Thor's bolt coming from the sky, but the lightning on the hammer just spiders out. Do you remember in Ghostbusters when they finally capture Slimer and one of them taps the Ghost Trap with their foot? The blue bolts emanate and wrap around the trap and I always that that looked great and I thought that would work perfectly for the hammer.

Again, just inspiring work, so inspiring that I plan on adding to WIP and/or contributing soon.

About War Machines Red eyes, when Rhodey first appears on stage with Justine Hammer there is a red tinge to the eyes, that's before the suit is taken over by whiplash, when Rhodey regains control again the eyes still have a red tinge to them, but the chest piece remains white throughout

For the benefit of everyone I've just skipped through the last half of Iron Man 2 to check this :)

I appreciate that you understand the mindset of being a designer. It's for that reason that I'm probably going to shoot down your suggestions, but I'm glad you realize that ahead of time! :D :D :D Sometimes, my WIPs get to a certain point that I'm incorporating ideas and suggestions that I don't really like, but seem to be popular opinions from members in the WIP. Often, this makes me feel less ownership of my own work, and I don't like the cover as much as an end result. For this cover, however, I'm really trying not to please everyone and make a cover that I'm happy with and proud of. That may lead to me being a bit defensive over my original decisions, but ultimately, I want this cover to be what I want it to be.

Questions:
Why did you opt it have Jane Foster way up front as opposed to Nick fury who seems to be a major player?

Several reasons...

a) Something I'll call "Symmetry of Gender." Foster balances with Black Widow on the left, the same way Maria Hill balances with Pepper Potts in the background, thus keeping a male/female symmetry in how the characters are arranged on either side of Captain America.
b) She was already next to Thor on the original poster that I got the Thor/Foster image from. I could only shift her around so much without having to clone half of her body. Unfortunately, some of what I can do is limited by the resources that are available.
c) Fury is a major player in Avengers, but only small cameos in the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe. He is a presence felt in the background of the other films, hence his placement.
d) I wanted to keep all of the SHIELD agents in the background, almost like the "second string." The superheroes should occupy the foreground (although Jane Foster's presence does conflict with this, but see A and B for my justification for that).

I considered it, but couldn't find a good image of it. Again, lack of resources. Believe me, if I had unlimited access to all of Marvel's imagery and photography for Avengers, I could do so much more. But I'm stuck working with what I have... :(

Thanks Darksaber for checking, and I never checked it against footage from Iron Man 2, but the image I got of War Machine had his eyes and chest piece red to begin with. I only added a Lens Flare to the chest piece to enhance it, but I kept the original coloring of the promo artwork. Even if his eyes are red and his chest piece is always white, I'm going to keep the coloring I have now. I like the red and it contrasts with Iron Man's blue glow.

This is something that I had thought about changing when I found more time. I didn't like how the lightning just seemed to radiate out from one side of the hammer. I'll look into way of making it look like it's enveloping and wrapping around Mjolnir.

Thanks again for liking the cover! But unfortunately, I'm very happy with the front and a little too far along on it to make any drastic alterations (like shifting characters around), but I will consider little adjustments like the lightning on Thor's hammer.

I hope the fact that I'm not taking your suggestions does not make you enjoy my work any less. :D
