Sorry Ford, my a$$ is still a little raw from that whuppin' you and your custom font gave me in the comp. Then some of the judges' comments kicked me while I was down. And to top it off, I'm still embarrassed that I even entered such a $hitty and forgettable cover into the competition at all (some time away from it has not made me like it any better, unfortunately). :D

Just let me be a little bitter for a while... :D :D :D

Honestly, I don't think you should be that down on yourself. Everyone has a cover that they think didn't turn out to the best it could... And I find it happens more when it is for a title that has less of a meaning to the designer.

I still think yours is amazing, and worthy of great praise.

In time I'm sure you will come to appreciate it more!

Thanks Ford... I appreciate that you appreciate the cover. I hope I'll like it some day, but right now, all I'm seeing are all of the flaws and the uninspired montage style that I use far too often.

I'm proud that it took second place, so I really have no reason to complain about that, but I still feel like my cover was a huge personal and creative failure. And I don't really care for the movie either... I find it slow, boring, and undeserving of the critical acclaim that it has received. It's a "horror" movie for the stuffy, old Academy voters. :D

I think that played a huge factor in your feelings for your cover. I think no matter what you did, you wouldn't have been fully satisfied.

Just think of it this way... you were only 6 points away from winning with a cover you weren't happy with, and a movie you didn't like! That's pretty impressive!

Regardless, you are on to a new project, and one that is absolutely perfect, so you don't have to think of this one any more.

I have the same opinion of the movie as you do, wasn't overly impressed.

I did like Raiders, but knew it would be a popular choice, and one that would be hard to make a truly unique cover for.

So, I picked The Artist.

Yes, it can be hard to hear things like...
"Perfect"
"Awesome"
"Clever"
"Great"
"Fantastic"
"Creative"
"Smashing"
"Excellent"
and
"My #1"

Okay, so I'm looking at the glass as half empty.

In my head, I tend to minimize the good comments and emphasize the room for improvement comments. I'm a perfectionist and my perception is such that if someone finds one fault, then they've found something to dislike about the cover, and therefore dislike the whole cover. I realize this is probably not the truth, but it's my instinctual reaction.

I finally took a moment to read through the judges' comments on the other covers, up to this point I only read the ones for my cover (I didn't really feel it was my business to know how others fared with the judges). I suppose I got off fairly light and other covers were more heavily criticized, so I do feel better knowing that each cover had its share of faults and I'm not alone.

I guess I'm just being a sore loser and I really shouldn't expect any sympathy for a 2nd place finish. I'm just beating myself up because I knew deep down that I could have done better with the cover, and I failed to meet the expectations that I set for myself. Unfortunately, no amount of praise will change the fact that I let myself down. I also felt a sense of obligation towards Hirescovers to repeat my performance in the first Battle Royal, and put a lot of pressure on myself to make the site proud. Ultimately, I think this self-imposed pressure and high expectation had an adverse effect on the overall design of the cover.

And Ford... you're right. The fact that I don't care for the movie itself (and had little interest in doing a Raiders or Artist cover either) has definitely affected how I view the cover.

I just hope that someone out there in the world likes it enough to print it and use it. That will feel like a small victory for me.
