Some hard questions, it's so much to do to get a nice cover. Photoshop is a good start. The resolution is 3240x2175 for standard covers. You can find some templates here at the site. Play around in photoshop with colors, levels and curves and hopefully you'll find something that you are pleased with later.

Your question is loaded and too complex for a single thread. My advice: read every Photoshop related thread in the Helpdesk, get Photoshop, get ready-made DVD templates and find a retail cover. Then practice by duplicating that retail cover. Go get em!
