HD-DVDs only play on HD-DVD Players. The HD in the model number for you player just refers to the fact that it can upscale regular DVDs to HD before outputting the tv (as opposed to letting the tv do the upscaling.) HD-DVDs are an entirely separate format from regular DVDs, and require a specific player.
Here is a list of HD-DVD capable players. There aren't many yet.
i found out it was not a hd-dvd player now but what can i do? i payed £17.99 for a hd-dvd and i can not play it. someone told me a hd-dvd add on for the xbox 360 is coming out for xmas but, will it play R1 hd-dvd
You can try returning it. You will be charged a restocking fee since its opened but most retail stores are accepting returns on HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs from people like yourself because alot of people are making the same mistake. Or you can sell it on ebay or something.
My guess would be that an HD-DVD addon for the Xbox 360 probably would be restricted to your region but that it wouldn't take long before a method was discovered to make it region free.
