Add Rim Light to your masked images.
Add a new Curves layer, by selecting Image > Adjustments > Curves
Drag the Curves line up to the top, middle so your image looks really bright

Select your masked image area, by clicking on the thumbnail on your images layer.
With your Curves layer mask selected, fill (G) the selected area with black (D to select default Black And White colours)
Press CTRL/CMD + D to deselect your selection
With your Curves layer mask still selected, adjust the Feather of your mask in your properties window (Windows > Properties to open the properties window). You may need to click on your masks thumbnail again, to bring up your mask properties.

Right click on your curves layer, and select Create Clipping Mask
You can now adjust the curves to brighten/darken the rim light and brush your mask to add/remove the rim light, to suit your background. On your Curves layer, click the curves icon to bring up your curves properties, and mask icon for mask properties
You can also add colour to your rim light, by adjusting the colour adjustments in your curves layer
