So I'm taking my 1st steps to designing a cover and have already hit a snag. The cover image I've chosen isn't exactly the right ratio so I've ended up with quite a large border. I don't know if there's any way to fix the ratio or whether I'll just have to fill it in with colours/patterns that match the rest of the image. I could probably afford to resize it a little more and cut a bit more off the edges without losing too much of the image though. Love this alternate movie poster.

Cool thanks. I guess those weren't bad ideas then. That's pretty much what I was thinking, just filling in the sides with some of the same colours. Just thought I'd check in case there was any way to modify the image further. Yeah I was going to remove the credits and just fill them in with the corresponding colour.
Thanks Sauron. Appreciate it, particularly since I'm completely new to this.

I would get rid of the text borders and the text (like in stampes example). You could also do something similar to what Fidi does with his covers, he has grunge edges on the sides of the artwork, it's not easy pulling it off as well as he does tho. Another route could be to cutout the artwork and create a background (city maybe) in similar style as the poster artwork.

Please keep my covers on this site and this site only!

Ah I like that one with the border Stampe. I didn't check back here in a few hours and ended up going down a slightly different route before I saw these suggestions. Initially i was happy with it but now I realise that filling in too much of the grey has made it look.....well a bit crap! I should have definitely went with Stampe's approach or changed the background (still reading through the tutorial and trying to figure out photoshop functions though).
At least it looks a bit better with the credits removed
Also took off that ugly-a$$ "how to watch a movie in 3D" banner part off the back. Still need to take the new line logo off too. Also: I realise that the line where the grey begins on the left isn't exactly aligned correctly that was the point where I thought I'd wrecked it a bit and decided to post my progress
