This is a good overview of getting started with Channel Masking but don't be too limited by the steps shown here as there are many ways to do things in Photoshop.
I use channel masks a lot in fact it is probably my most used masking method other than the pen tool, my process while similar in ways to this, is quite different in other ways from this one, you can use a lot more layer and image tools on the channels layers to adjust & manipulate them than is being shown here.
I won't confuse this tutorial by getting to deep into that now, as that is unnecessary to follow the basic instruction that this Tutorial is intended to convey but the point is--once you learn new things like this--always keep in mind they are just starting points on your journey to mastering a new process in Photoshop and after the concept of what you are actually doing starts to become understood--then you will be equipped to see ways to improve on this and many other processes learned via tutorials.

Excellent tutorial Curt, thanks for posting it.
I do use channels and the calculation feature in my extractions but the bit at about 4.55 mark about fill using black and overlay was very interesting and cool.
Also using the brush tool on blend mode on overlay is something new to me and awesome.
Keep being amazed at the power of photoshop
Didn't know the padlock to the trash trick, nice.
Again, excellent post mate,
