Sorry for not posting a behind-the-scenes for Stargirl this past week... the days ended up being surprisingly busy and just couldn't find the time to put something together. Maybe I'll do a "BTS" post that covers a few different covers at some point.

But for now...

Kernie's Weekly Cover Update #23: Harley Quinn!
[Click image to view in gallery]

I took some time to watch this show recently and I think it's my favorite animated thing from DC since Justice League Unlimited. It's crude, it's funny, and does a lot of things that mock the Batman universe without ever actually insulting it. Great voice performances and colorful animation. While I'm not a huge fan of DC shoving profanity and excessive violence into their other animated material, those loud, vulgar elements work perfectly here in the wild and crazy world of Harley Quinn.

I decided to make one cover for both "Season 1 & 2," for a few reasons...

1) Lack of resources that would work with my template. Most of what was out there just wouldn't fit with my "ripped paper" layout.

2) Season 2 starting airing just a little over a month after Season 1 ended. Which tells me that this was produced as one big 26-episode season that eventually got split up by DC Universe for marketing purposes (similar to how Season 3 of Young Justice got split up and aired in two parts).

3) They have yet to announce production on a third season. Not saying it couldn't happen, but the show seems to have been popular with fans and critics since it premiered. If DC Universe wanted a third season, they probably would have greenlit it back when Season 1 was airing.

4) The DC Universe streaming service is all but extinct. They recently stopped allowing yearly subscriptions for new members, meaning it probably won't be around for another year. Their "exclusive" shows are now being shared on other services as well: Stargirl airs on both DC Universe and The CW, Swamp Thing will re-air its one and only season on the CW this fall, and Doom Patrol is now shared with HBO Max (with Harley Quinn to follow soon). Harley Quinn aired in a censored form on SyFY as well. Titans is getting a third season, but it's not clear exactly where it will air. So, if these shows do continue, it's very likely they won't be on the DC Universe service (at least not exclusively).

All that being said, I'm kind of anticipating that this "Season 1 & 2" cover set will probably get changed to a "Complete Series" set in the future, in the event that a third season does not move forward. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens. In the meantime, enjoy Harley Quinn! :D :D :D

P.S. This show is super adult. It might look bright and fun, but don't show it to your kids.

great work as always. I watched the show and personally hated it, i quit watching it halfway through season 1 and that was more than enough for me. I personally find outside of the DCAU there hasnt been a whole of great stuff from them for me anyways. But as always each to their own, glad to see some ppl enjoy it

It's funny you say that, because I actually watched the first three or four episodes back in the winter and couldn't get into it at first. I thought it was manic and trying too hard to be edgy and extreme. I didn't hate it, but I wasn't hooked.

I wanted to give it another chance and binged the entire series a few weeks ago. It did grow on me towards the end of the first season. I can totally understand how you were put off by the first handful of episodes, because I sort of felt the same. It needed some time to develop for me.

The portrayal of Gordon as an aging, overly-caffeinated cop barely clinging on to sanity was my favorite part, and voice actor Christopher Meloni (who I love from Wet Hot American Summer) is perfect for the role. The portrayal of Batman, Robin, and Batgirl is really well done too. There's also a Mr. Freeze episode that is quite good. Some aspects, like some of the members of Harley's new gang and Ivy's talking plant in particular, just never worked for me throughout the entire series.

As you said, to each their own, and I'm not trying to change your opinion. I can absolutely understand that this show is not for everyone. I warmed up to it after a while, but I can see where others might not.

And I completely agree that the DCAU is much better than nearly every other animated DC and Marvel project out there (although there are a few movies and shows that come somewhat close). :D :D :D

Personally not got round to watching this one yet, it is on my todo list but if i could get through "Doom Patrol", I should be able to enjoy this, glad about the heads up on the not for kids as was gonna watch it with my 9 yr old daughter. Loving the nice bright colours on this cover, and the Harley Quinn logo, simply stunning, another superb addition really, need to do lego DC Shazam - Magic and monsters to complete the set :)
