That sounds like a good choice.Darksaber wrote:QUOTE (Darksaber @ Sep 28 2019, 05:33 AM) So do I print 2 of the same cover and put 4 in each?
Just as a heads-up, since you mentioned that you didn't realize Kernie spends so much time creating key art from scratch --
Note that the background panels and ripped paper span across the entire cover, so a new spine size requires a whole series of adjustments. Producing the titles you listed in "a few different spine sizes" is hours of additional work.
(You're an incredibly valuable supporter of this thread, and it's easy to appreciate that you want this awe-inspiring collection to be as vast and usable for as many people as possible. But, you're volunteering Kernie for a big pile of work which you yourself describe as "none of these are necessary".
Yes exacty, I did say "none of these are necessary", meaning that none of them are needed, I was just compiling a small list to show which titles had more than 7 discs, most of which I've already bought!
Kernie did mention a few posts back, that he would be updating Night Man changing it from Marvel to Malibu at some point in time, when I don't know and I was just making a suggestion that while he was updating it he could possibly add a couple of wider spines to cater for the increased number of discs.
I'm NOT telling or asking him to make them, I know from past experience, that's not a good idea or way to go about things on here!
Admittedly I should have wrote "In Future" it might be an idea, if a series has over 6 discs, to make a few different spine sizes for them to accommodate more discs. I doubt very much that this will need to be done with current tv seasons.
Oh yes thank you for heads up, but if your going to quote what I wrote please get it right! I did NOT say "I didn't realize Kernie spends so much time creating key art from scratch" I actually wrote "I didn't realise you made your own keyart from scratch" where is it that I wrote that he "spends so much time" your implying that I said he wastes more time on the keyart than anything else.
Also thank you for pointing out the background panels and ripped paper, that was so kind of you! I do realise that this all takes time, I do have experience of making covers and disc labels myself, just not to the extent or talent some of you may have done, just search my nickname on Customanicas you'll find 30 pages of what I've made.

Let me start off by saying that I am not upset or annoyed with either Bunny Dojo and Darksaber. I respect and admire both of you as friends and I don't want my comments below to be interpreted with anything less than a calm, friendly tone.
But please realize that "suggestions," "requests," "food for thought," "daydreams," "ideas," it's all just semantics. What you're essentially saying is that you would ultimately like to see me make something for you. I know you're not demanding it or expecting it. However you want to classify it, it's still a "request" for my time and services.
Bunny Dojo is spot on when he says that making alternate spine sizes requires a lot of subtle adjustments to the template due to the spanning rip across the cover. I'm not going to make all these different sizes simply because you can't decide which case you might want to use.
I appreciate that you put together a list of titles that may require larger spine sizes. I totally understand the need for it. If I can find the time to do it in the future, I will certainly try.
I'm also swamped with work, family, side projects, family, my cover-making hobby, and family. So it can be a little stressful seeing a list of half-a-dozen titles that need updating on top of the list of titles that people are still asking for (Endgame, Far From Home, Dark Phoenix... okay maybe not Dark Phoenix, and all of the upcoming and recently released TV titles). Needless to say, I'm not jumping for joy at the thought of more stuff to do... especially after spending nearly the last 50 days uploading a new cover per day.
Last but not least, at the end of the day, we're talking about discs... DVD discs in most cases... a format that is dying and practically dead. At some point I have to ask myself, "How much time am I willing to spend on such a niche market?" I'm amazed there's still so much interest in the custom cover game in general when the majority of movie watchers have switched to exclusively streaming their content. We're catering to a very small audience with custom covers these days. Some 4K custom covers are here, but Blu-ray is probably still the dominant cover format.
I know you have a lot of investment in the DVD format, but hopefully you can understand my hesitation to take time away from family to focus on making multiple slightly thicker spine versions of a cover I've already made for a decades-old TV show on a physical media format that is all but extinct, in addition to all of the new covers that are still being asked of me.
Okay... rant over... I'm going to start uploading today's covers!

Thank you, Bunny Dojo. I share your sentiments and appreciate that you understand that what some people might view as a minor change is actually hours of additional work (hours which, I might add, are not exactly in abundance for me right now). You phrased my thoughts with much less profanity and sarcasm than I probably would have.Bunny Dojo wrote:QUOTE (Bunny Dojo @ Sep 28 2019, 03:43 PM) That sounds like a good choice.

I understood where you were coming from, DS. I think you may be misreading Bunny Dojo's post. I don't believe he meant it to be as harsh as you might be interpreting it.Darksaber wrote:QUOTE (Darksaber @ Sep 28 2019, 06:18 PM) I'm NOT telling or asking him to make them, I know from past experience, that's not a good idea or way to go about things on here!

What I do get a little frustrated with is the idea of making "multiple" spine sizes when I asked you to give me a preferred size. I understand the need for a thicker case when there are sets with more than 6 discs. But let's all settle on a consistent size that would be useful for the largest amount of people and go with that size. Making 20mm, 28mm, 36mm, 5,268mm, etc. sizes is starting to ask for a lot and opening up a huge can of worms.Darksaber wrote:QUOTE (Darksaber @ Sep 28 2019, 06:18 PM) Admittedly I should have wrote "In Future" it might be an idea, if a series has over 6 discs, to make a few different spine sizes for them to accommodate more discs. Again, I think you may be misinterpreting Bunny Dojo. By saying "I didn't realize you made your own keyart from scratch" sounds like you think I just copy and paste some keyart into the template without spending a lot of time on it (I know you don't actually think that way but that's how the quote might be misread). Despite not specifically mentioning "time," I think the implication of time (or lack thereof) can be misread in your quote.Darksaber wrote:QUOTE (Darksaber @ Sep 28 2019, 06:18 PM) Oh yes thank you for heads up, but if your going to quote what I wrote please get it right! Nobody is denigrating your work or insinuating that you don't know how to make covers. I've always been impressed by the quantity and quality of your work over at Customaniacs and you know how much I value your support for this collection. It has grown as big as it has largely due to your continued interest and enthusiasm and I am definitely not trying to insult or argue with you in this post.Darksaber wrote:QUOTE (Darksaber @ Sep 28 2019, 06:18 PM) Also thank you for pointing out the background panels and ripped paper, that was so kind of you! Here are conversions for the recently-released 4K Ultra-HD editions of the Burton/Schumacher Batman films. Don't waste your time asking about "What about the Nolan trilogy? They've been out on 4K for a while now!" because that would be spoiling tomorrow's surprise... dammit, I just spoiled it.

"Wastes?" Not at all.Darksaber wrote:QUOTE (Darksaber @ Sep 28 2019, 07:18 PM) where is it that I wrote that he "spends so much time" your implying that I said he wastes more time on the keyart than anything else.
Many of us likely saw "Casper Saves Halloween" and assumed it took an hour using great retail artwork. Then, Kernie described the remarkable work involved in creating something new and fantastic out of very little. I just wanted to re-highlight the difference in how much time these things take versus what we -- you, me, all of us -- sometimes assume.
With that in mind, I didn't realize until today how much work it would require each time for each spine size, and figured maybe you didn't either.
Your enthusiasm is a wonderful driving force in this thread, whereas so many of us think "another great Kernie addition!" but don't post frequently enough. But, for a guy with limited time who seems to thrive on new creative challenges and fresh positive feedback, hours of width adjustments to already-finished covers seemed like an unintentionally heavy request. Just a friendly "Whoa, let's go easy on him!" from one Kernie fan to another.

One thing we all have to remember, is this is a hobby. The moment it becomes demanding, is the moment an artist will lose interest in making cover art. I am not suggesting anyone here recently has been demanding, but in the past people have been very demanding. Some to the point where it has come across that members feel they are owed a cover from Kernie. But saying that, many posts can become 'lost in translation' too. When you are reading a text, you are often presuming the manor in which it is written. When you are talking in person, you can see someones facial expressions or tone of voice, and interpret the same sentence in the way it was intended, without guessing.
