If you have never used the Pen tool you might want to check out this first: Pen Tool - Getting Started - Overview and a Reference Guide

For this tutorial I'm going to cut-out a basic office item, a desk stapler, it is a HQ stock image 3000px on a solid white background, background removal will be accomplished in three(3) steps, total time about five(5) mins.

1. Outline the object with a path.
2. Remove the see thru part on the upper half from the path.
3. Apply a vector mask, created from the path.

At the end of this post is a link to download the stock image used and the final PSD, so you can follow along and have a closer look at the finished image.

Notes:

You could convert the path to a selection and apply a normal pixel mask but I prefer vector masks wherever possible, the reason is it makes editing the mask simpler--should any tweaking be required and they are more precise than pixel masks.

That is excellent. I had no idea about vector masks, that is going to be very handy to know :)
