Adding Detail to Black Areas

It is very common to come across a perfect image with deep black areas that do not show the shape of clothes, etc. In this image, Andrea's black bathing suit is painfully lacking detail compared to the other characters. Even with character work (recoloring), the pitch black area stands out. I learned this trick from looking closely at Bunny Dojo's outstanding work on adding detail to dark suits.

So try using curve adjustments and use a mask to draw in where you want the contours to be. This is the alpha channel.
This curve adjustment is to outline her breasts and her side.

Great tutorial, Paris!

You made a very smart choice in your example image, too. This is usually one of those "invisible" skills, but here it's easy to appreciate the Roger Moore-approved added value.

The tutorials are from covers I'm working on, but I'm not excited enough about the covers to finish them at the moment. :(
