Cover Site Battle Royal III!
I think Kernie got the issue spot on when he said that it was ultimately his hand on the paintbrush when it came to creating his entries.
In that respect, asking for the odd logo, a spell check, or even general pointers about the layout is far different from saying 'hey, could you make me a TT?' or 'could you work on this photo so it looks like this one?' etc. After all, it is the artist who chooses the font, its size, colour and placement, the artist who chooses where to put the logos, the artist who chooses whether or not to include the bar code from the template. The key is in the doing. Simply bouncing back a few ideas between fellow entrants is entirely harmless.
Even in the WIP threads, how often is a design completely overhauled by someone other than the designer themselves? Sure, there is the odd time when several people will advise the designer that an idea totally isn't working, or suggest something that could be added, but it is ultimately the designer who makes the changes to the PSD, and who comes up with the general concept of the cover.
A question to those who appear to swear by secrecy: what happens if you're working on the cover and a member of your family walks in and sees it? What if, heaven forbid, they even make a comment about it? Is it a do over? Is your potential victory forever tainted by that moment?
Maybe for next year each competitor should be led to a secure facility in the middle of the night and locked in a small darkened room containing only a computer with nothing but Photoshop installed on it, a few snacks, and a big clock counting down from 24 hours, the door re-opening when it gets to 0. Could this be arranged Tim?

Thanks for this post! You point to some of my own considerations/thoughts on this matter; only you put it in such elaborate words that I never would be able to!![]()
