I'm not sure if Bane is proportioned correctly. His head looks a little too big.
I have to agree. It looks like a dwarf (too big head, small body) Especially his shoulders should be broader.
It's a minor nitpick jw, what you do is very original and fantastic.Last edited by JollyRoger on Mon Feb 11, 2013 6:28 am, edited 1 time in total.A designer knows he has achieved perfection - not when there's nothing left to add - but when there's nothing left to take away

Nice start on this one, jw! Amazed by your skills with a tablet!!
Unfortunately, I have to agree with JR... Bane's shoulders should be a bit broader and he should be more muscular in general.
Looking forward to seeing where you go with this... I'm still a little unsure about the whole concept with the jack-in-the-box (seems too much of a Joker element, not really fitting Bane's character). I certainly admire your unconventional approach, but it may be a bit too light and quirky for such a dark, dismal film. But I'll shut up until I see more.

: DUpdate:
Decreased his head size by about 5% or so and broadened him up a little. Also moved his vest up, which I think helps make his shoulders look a little fuller.
The thing with Tom Hardy is he looks big in some shots, then not so much in others so it's hard to gauge his muscularity. His arms aren't actually that big; his bulky traps and shoulders just give the illusion that the rest of his body has similar proportions.
Regardless, it's probably best to overestimate than underestimate here - I like to exaggerate a little in these pieces anyway.

With regards to you thoughts Kernie, the idea of the jack-in-the-box is half to capture the dynamic of the film, and half to tie in with my cover for The Dark Knight, which features puppets. Likewise my Batman Begins artwork (which hasn't yet formed a cover) has a miniature Batman standing in the palm of al Ghul's hand.
The Joker and Bane are similar in that they try to get a rise out of Batman. However, where the Joker was 'toying' with Batman and Harvey Dent - and indeed playing them off one another - with Bane it's more about the return, or resurrection, of Batman.
With that in mind, I was trying to come up with something that would tell that story. I needed Bane somehow bringing Batman back into view. With the latter lying dormant, out of sight, as the premise of this film, I thought the jack-in-the-box metaphor kind of worked. Bane knows that if he keeps winding, Batman will appear.
The image captures the moment in which Batman finally appears from the box (you may notice a little motion blur, and Bane's hand still on the winder) and by translation comes out of retirement.
It may be a little wacky for what is quite a gritty film, but I feel that a certain wackiness is necessary in concept art. After all, it's supposed to be a kind of narrative encapsulated within a single image. Having Batman stood beneath a burning bat symbol as they do in the official artwork doesn't really reveal much.
All that being said, I remain open to ideas on what else may work with regards to this topic.

Fair enough... you've obviously thought this out. I'll refrain from sharing my thoughts and await the finished artwork.

I didn't intend for my post to come across as me saying "you're wrong" or to cease contributing ideas, but merely to share my thought process so that yourself and others are able to see my intentions for the design. It was more a way of encouraging suggestions than closing off to them.
Your thoughts, and anybody else's, are more than welcome here.
Just playing around with a few colours. Quite like the orange tone, but will be using that on my Batman Begins cover, so would like to try something different. Have used blue for The Dark Knight, so don't want to use that either.
What do people think? I'm not dead set on these precise shades yet, but just the general colour.
Also need something for bottom left if anyone has any thoughts? Some kind of relic from the film might be ideal.

How about a broken Batman mask or something from the catwoman?
Anyway, I like the purple tone too.Last edited by Cirus on Mon Feb 11, 2013 12:34 pm, edited 1 time in total.
