On a note for anyone out there, are there any guides to give some basics as to this sort of process and how to bring out such clarity and detail to B&W stills?
The High Pass filter sauron mentioned is definitely a great tool. That's probably the only "trick" that comes to mind. The rest is mostly just cloning out debris and adjusting levels and contrast. I think the color itself is a huge tool, since you can actually "create" detail. Here's an extreme example of a suit, in black and white versus color:

That's using nothing but the "Color" blending mode, and suddenly you've added a huge amount of sharpness and information that couldn't have been in the black and white version. :)

and now making his own fonts, that's it i'm through, hehe I'll never be like Bunny!
:D I'm not too fancy, it's mostly just based on the poster's fonts:

Thanks for all of the encouragement, guys! I'm hoping to come up with a colorizing tutorial one of these days, once I figure out the correct process. :) It seems like the kind of thing that should take only a few layers, but I tend to pile up 20-40 layers trying to get skin tones right, so I don't think I quite have the hang of it yet. :D

Mrs v loves the Casablanca image in Post #66, would you mind if she painted it on canvas?

Wow, between your talent and your wife being a painter, that must be one very creative household. :) She's definitely welcome to use the image. I can PM you a larger / full-length / white background version if it would be helpful.

She is fairly new to painting, but shows a lot of talent already.. especially when doing portraits.

Here's another one that's been in progress, The Maltese Falcon (from a Nikerun suggestion a long while back ;) ).
It's pretty simple, so either a wild title treatment or an additional image is probably going to be needed to further spruce things up. :)
