I understand simple fades such as using gradient fills on layer masks, but I have seen some great fades by others with a kind of speed blur/drag fad effect bewteen to layers (Eg. the Cars cover with Hudson as the main image).

If anyone can point me in the direction of some great fade techniques I would be eternally grateful. I am particularly looking for interesting ways to add essentially square stills to a back cover.
