Red discoloration on cover prints

Hye all!

I need your help. I have problems with many of my cover prints. I use HQ glossy photo paper (260 grams) and i use HQ ink, in combination with a Canon Pixma MP600 All-in-one Printer. The problem is about red discoloration on my cover prints, especially visible on dark prints.
The discoloration process takes a month/a few months, but at the end they all get the virus.

Do you recognize these red discoloration problems? Any suggestions what the reason of this problem can be?

Uhm, I've had quite a few pixmas - 1 mp600 and 2 mp610. The one I have now just went dead on me, so next time I'll go laser.

In the pixma series black consists of 2 diff toners. Please ensure both are filled. Also, in my experience most of the copy inks hold bad color with loads of misprints. On this last mp610 I've only used original cartridges, which have improved my printing. Other than that, I assume you print via PS. Let the printer handle colors, and adjust your screen to the printer rather than trying to go the other way.

The reason why I go laser is the astounding ammount of magenta ink the pixmas uses. Prices alone :yikes: Won't even begin to find out how many new printers I could have purchased for the inkl price alone lol

Come across this problem recently myself with an epson printer.... The cause of my problem was actually the glossy paper itself.
I tried different glossy paper and the problem went away. The red ink line can also be cause by a tiny blockage in the ink head, not
enough to stop ink flow but just enough to prevent full ink flow.

I normally print my covers on matte paper (130 gsm) however i'm been printing alot of other stuff that need to go on glossy, how i came across this problem in the first place.

My final prints are looking pretty good. But the red discoloration comes up after a month/few months. I notice that the red discoloration comes up only at the borders.

I am using all the tips you suggest allready. You are right Jolly, maybe I prefer a laser printer in the future also.
Almost all my dvd's and blurays have the virus of red discoloration.

Yeah, probably the glossy paper is the problem. But the paper I use has been tested, and has better testresults then original photo paper from Canon


Yeah, that would be a cause when the final print comes out with a red border. But my prints discolorate after a while.

FYI I use only verbatim Glossy Photo Paper 150gsm. They hold color even after a few onths. That said, inkjets rarely keep year after year if exposed to too much sunlight. I have seen you can buy transparent spray to keep the colors tho. Haven't tried that out myself, but have been considering

It definitely looks like the paper is the problem. Or maybe where your storing your Blu-rays (humidity, heat, sunlight could affect it). It looks like it only affects the bottom and top parts of the cover which would be the most vulnerable once in the case and not the sides of it...

Yeah. I store them in a special closet for dvd's with 2 doors of glass which are closed. The humidity, heat and sunlight cant be the problem.

he transparancy spray is good for finishing a printable dvd as it keeps the colour great and gives it a glossy finish when i use printable discs for projects i do other people

The problem indeed is the paper.

I've tested a lot of types and brands of paper as I encountered the same problem.

For about 2 years now I use a house brand paper (190 gr/m2 premium gloss) from the company that I work for myself in the Netherlands in combination with my PIXMA MP560 and it works perfectly.

Ofcourse, you could always go with the genuine paper from Canon and calibrate you printer to improve results

I see that you also come from the Netherlands. The company I work for is located in Noord-Holland (Hoorn). The paper is about € 14,-. Shipmentcosts are € 4,95 for each order you place under the 100 euros (above it's free).

As I don't want to come across as someone who does this for personal gain, I can also check which manufacturer is the supplier to our company, so you can also get it elsewhere.

I bought my paper at 123inkt.nl (123inkt house brand photo paper, premium glossy 260 grams). You can check their test research. Their test results are better than, for example, the genuine paper from Canon. If you are familiar with their paper or when you know more, just PM me your 'knowledge'. Probably you have an explanation for the red discoloration problem too
