The first movie is properly titled the 'Philosopher's' Stone... I think your cover should have that... why on earth it needed to be changed in the US baffles me, but I think the cover needs the proper title.

Because in the US, a philosopher means someone who studies philosophy (i.e. the rational investigation of the truths and principles of being, knowledge, or conduct), without any connotations of magic or the occult. The term "sorcerer" makes more sense to us, as it implies having magical powers and abilities.

It's kind of along the lines of "football" and "soccer." To different cultures and regions, the terms do not have the same meaning.

Kernie had a bit harder time using it because of the US book covers used for the front, but maybe it will be easier for you.[/quote]
Oh, so you did look at my covers, bpmford? I wouldn't have known... you've been so silent in my threads.

PS... Love the latest update, wes!! :D :D :D

Sorry kerne for not replying on yours, I have been just reading through different threads on my phone here and there, I did look ,and I will give your showcase a reply, was meaning to any way.

I know exactly why it was called Sorcerer's stone, and it doesn't justify it in my mind. If kids in the US would not read a harry potter book because of a word in it's title, than that's just crazy. In Canada we use the same terms as you guys, but it wasn't changed here, and it didn't hurt sales either. Just seems like a pointless attempt at the us publishers to have control over an author's work. J.K. didn't want to do it, but she had to. And all it does is create this negative persona of the US that their kids aren't intelligent enough to understand the difference, but the rest of the world can. Is a shame.

Either way, I prefer the original title, and each designer will do things differently for that movie.

Ad for the football / soccer thing... the real football was started many years ago by the Greeks and Romans... why the US had to choose the same name as it's predecessors, and rename the other to soccer is beyond me, but that is neither here nor there.

I'm sure this whole thing can be a lengthy discussion that I will leave out of poor wessim's thread! lol

Keep up the great work wes!

I have to say - not to hi-jack the thread - I prefer the original title. I have seen too many movies who get one or another ridiculous title abroad.

I understand your points, as I'm typically against changing a film's title, but I hardly think Philosopher to Sorcerer is one of the worst offenses of a title change in the history of international cinema. I'm just saying... :D

P.S. Not to keep harping on this issue, but I think if Philosopher's Stone had been a later book in the series, she would have been allowed to keep the title. It was her first book in the series, it was released to light fanfare and didn't really gain a massive following until the second and third book were released, she was an unproven writer by most accounts, and the phenomenon surrounding the books was nonexistent. I think Rowling made a small compromise in order to get her books published in the US (which is where they needed to be well-received in order for the movies to be greenlit). Do I agree with the change? Not really. But when it's your first major shot at getting your work out into the world (and becoming the gazillionaire that she has become), you have to make a few concessions to make things happen. Now that she has more money than God and can pretty much do whatever she wants, I think she can title an 8th book Harry Potter and the Poop that Wouldn't Flush and get away with it. In fact, I'd be interested in reading it... :D

I see your point kernie... I guess I need to brush up on my timeline, because to me I thought that there were at least 3 or 4 books out before they made it to the US, so an name change seemed pointless given the whole series' popularity... If it is the way you say, then it makes more sense...

I do agree with you and JR, the original is better, as is any original title unless it needs to be translated into another language... But even then a foreign movie deserves to keep it's foreign title just as much as an American, Canadian or UK movie does!

WOW!!! Looks great I agree about the hand, and the background should either involve giant spiders, the flying car or the snake.
