So, Arkflip has been gently prodding me to do these covers for quite some time now, and to be honest, I didn't know what I could do that would be different from what so many other great and talented designers had done for these films. Some designers have created awesome keyart from promotional photos and stills from the films, others have gone the "old book" route (like Golemeye, donger, DarthVong, CavemanLawyer, JollyRoger, Bazzah, CyberClown, and Arkflip himself), some have used the Drew Struzan posters, and others have done some variation of these approaches. To put it bluntly, our gallery has plenty of Potter covers already and there was no need for me to do yet another set of covers.

And then it hit me as I was walking around my local Barnes & Noble...

I saw this complete set of the Harry Potter paperbacks and thought, "Hey, that kind of reminds of the spines on my Buffy covers." And then I thought, "Those Harry Potter book spines would make great spines for DVD/Blu-ray covers!" and then I thought, "I should use the book cover artwork for the front covers of the DVDs!"

But then, I assumed somebody else surely must have had this idea already in the ten years it took to bring all the Potter films to the screen. To my surprise, a quick search on this site and Customaniacs showed no Potter covers done in this way (I didn't check any other sites, so if someone else had this idea before, I offer my sincerest apologies).

So, now that I finally had an idea that was different from all the other great Potter covers on this site, I've started on some covers...

What do you think so far?? I hope there's an audience for these type of covers, I know they're quite different from the typical "Potter-movie-style" artwork, but I hope some folks will use them! :D

On a side note, I know there have been a few inquiries about Angel covers to match my Buffy sets, while I do plan to do them soon, I've got the creative spark for these Potter covers, so I'm going to work on them before the ambition fades! :D

Me too! :D :D :D

Does anybody have a pic/scan of what the back cover of the paperbacks look like? I actually don't own the books myself and my g/f has the hardcovers, which don't have the same spines as the one in my photo above.

I was thinking about approaching the back a bit more along the lines of a conventional DVD cover, but without using imagery from the films, to keep the style more in line with the illustration on the front cover. :chin:

Thanks, V!

Scholastic's website (the book publisher) already has each book cover in high-res, with consistent dimensions as well. So, I'm in great shape for the front covers! :D

here's a low-res version of the back, great job so far, way to think outside the back.

Awesome covers kernie. Just a suggestion for the bottom with JK Rowling....maybe add a tagline like "based on the book by" or "by NY Times Bestselling author" or something to that extent....i think you know what i'm trying to get at....can't wait to see the Blus too!!
