JR asked for this a while ago and I never quite had the ambition to get to it: a companion cover of "Tales of the Black Freighter" to go along with the Watchmen custom I made last year. I'm trying to mimic the layout as close as possible, replacing the Watchmen elements with elements from the Black Freighter story. You can see how it's going below:

As you can see, the Black Freighter ship takes the place of Rorschach. I re-rendered the police tape to look like tattered cloth pieces (possibly from torn sails, etc.) and rendered a 3D Title Treatment from the original Watchmen TT file. I know I still have to render a TT for the spine, I need to move the word "Freighter" to the same line as "Black" for the spine version to make it fit better.

I'll probably replace the shattered glass shards with crows or buzzards flying away from the ship. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the back exactly, but I'll get to that when the front is a bit closer to finished. I'll probably replace the smiley on the back with the pirate logo thing from the spine (the emblem used on the retail Ultimate Edition DVD/Blu). I just need to paint out the black smiley parts and composite the pirate symbol onto it.

As for now, what do you think? :D :D

EDIT: For those that might be wondering, I will be adding this title to my Comic Book Collection, too. But I'll probably go with the retail cover art for that one.

Looking great so far, I guess you can't go wrong mimicking that great Watchmen cover :)

Excellent work my friend! :)

Are you gonna incorporate the jolly roger icon to the back?

If you're referring to that pirate symbol thing that I have at the bottom of the spine, then yes... :D :D :D

Update.

[attachment=12687:watchmen...over_002.jpg]

Obviously, some elements haven't been changed yet from my Watchmen cover, but this might give a better idea of how the back is going to look. I still need to add more stuff to the front, but I replaced the back smiley with the pirate symbol and replaced the title treatment on the spine.

How's it looking?

Apart from the broken glass shard, which holds no meaning for this title, I like it very much :) Looking forward to see how it looks in da Blu case ;)

I'm liking this very much. Your Watchmen was one of my favorite covers and this is turning into a very nice companion to it. Can't wait to see how you handle the rest of the design.

I'm going to replace the broken glass shard on the back, just haven't figured out what to replace it with. :P

Any suggestions?
