If you want to quickly select a Photoshop tool temporarily, and automatically go back to the tool you were previously using, press and hold the tool button shortcut key.
For example, if you are using the brush tool but want to quickly select an area using the lasso tool, hold the L button down. While holding the L key, select your area. When you release the L key, you will be returned to your brush tool. This works with all tool shortcuts that I have tried.
