I posted this because I feel that anyone who has a hotmail account needs to act now to insure the security of it. I logged in, checked the status of an order I placed, and less then 20 hours later, I was closed out. They even changed my birth date to help block the recovery.

I had an issue with a hacker stealing my hotmail account. I feel anyone who has a hotmail account should read this.

I checked my hotmail E-mail on Wednesday, no problems. I went to my yahoo E-mail on Thursday before I left work and I got an E-mail on my yahoo account from me (coming from my hotmail account) as follows:

QUOTE
I'm writing this with tears in my eyes, I Came down here to England for a short vacation and got mugged at gun point last night at the hotel of the park where i lodged. All cash, credit cards and cell Were stolen. I 've Been to the embassy and the Police here But They Are Not helping issues at all, Our flight leaves today and I'm Having Problems Settling the hotel bills.

The hotel manager will not let us leave until i Pay the hotel bills (£ 1,450) now am freaked out. Please reply and let me if you can wire Money through western union to me, I promise to pay back as soon as i get back home.
I went to the hotmail account and tried to get through by the forget password option. The secondary E-mail had my hotmail address (opened 10 years ago, my first E-mail) and I never had a secret question. I googled "my hotmail account was hacked" and I found out how to try and get it back. I needed my home IP, so as I was leaving for home soon, I put it on hold until I got home.

This was the account I used to access paypal, so I contacted them first. I asked if I changed the main access E-mail would it send a notice to the old E-mail as I didn't want to tip off the hacker that I was changing E-mails and my password. He sad no (he was wrong. An E-mail was sent to the hotmail account saying I changed both)

As this was an older account, I could not remember who was in my contacts and wasn't sure if I had E-mailed any of the Membership from this account, so I posted this thread as a heads up.

What concerned me was this:

QUOTE

There were people I know now and are in my past that would send money because of this statement. They know that if I say I will pay you back, they would get their money back, period. You could take that to the bank.

So anyway, I went back to the hotmail sign-in, followed the procedure to change password and clicked their help icon. Put "password hacked" in the search and followed prompts to the form I had to fill out. About 8 hours later, Microsoft sent me an E-mail to my yahoo account with the link to get my account back.

All my contacts were erased so I would not know who he sent E-mails to, however I was able to recover that info and E-mail all the people and told them it was a scam.

He did however receive a reply from someone asking where to send the money. So this dirtbag sent the following

QUOTE
I have nothing left on me right now, thank God i still have my life and passport it would have been worst if they had made away with my passport. All i need is 2,300USD you can have it wired to my name via Western Union i'll have to show my passport as ID to pick it up here and i promise to pay you back as soon as i get back home. Here's my info below Name - He put my name Address:29 Lyttelton Road, London E7 0JW, England Country:United Kingdom. As soon as it has been done, kindly get back to me with the confirmation number. Let me know if you are heading to the WU outlet now???
So it is about 2:00 AM, I can't contact this guy. I'm beside myself (good thing because 2 heads are better than 1) and I realized Western Union. I go to their website (contact us) and they had a phone number for Fraud Prevention. After 40 minutes in total, my name is now flagged as a possible fraud so if someone sends me money, the sender will be contacted and interviewed about it before Western Union will transfer the money. They also checked and at that time no one by my named picked up money or his name sent money.

I found out while researching this that a little while back, some hotmail accounts and passwords were compromised and posted on a website. So I strongly suggest the following if you have a hotmail account.

First you go here, or if you don't want to use this link do the following:
- Go to the sign-in page for hotmail
- Click "Forgot your password?"
- Click "Help Center"
- In the search area put "password hacked"
- Click "What do I do if I think someone is using my Windows Live ID?"
- Click "If you can't sign in with your Windows Live ID"
- Click "Windows Live ID Validation form"

I would recommend you only access this Validation form these two ways as this way you are assured you are communication with Microsoft.

Look at the info they are asking for and make note of it. the more of this info they can verify the better your chance of getting the account back.

I read notices from people saying MS would not help them because it is a free account and there was no way to prove who owns it. Keep this in mind when reading what will help identify you as the owner.

I was lucky, the account name is my name and a few other things that only the owner could supply and so I got it back. Still doing damage control.

So protect yourselves right now.
