AVG will do the trick indeed.
As Coolwolf is saying copy the content of your DVD to a new folder on your HDD.
Scan the folder with AVG which will clean or move the infected file(s) to your virus vault.
When your done cleaning, throw away your DVD and burn the content of your new folder to a DVD.

Design a nice label and print it on your DVD and you ready with your new backup

you do know every time you load the dvd backup that the virus will always be there as you cant remove it from a dvd

i sugest you make a folder on your computer extract the files from the backup to the folder ignore any virus warnings

as a virus wont activate unless you use the file its attached to then scan the folder on your computer remove the virus then make a new backup without the virus

generally you should start up the computer in safe mode if using xp then do the virus scan using avg.
i have used nortons forever because that is what we use at work but there are some great ones out there.
another one is pest patrol which is from computer associates. avg is free!!
the virus will most probably be in your run folder in your registry.
if you are game then click start then run and type in regedit and press enter.
open the following folders in the sequence
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
there will be a weird file name, if not sure google the name
delete it only if you are sure.
this file will have been created with a couple of others and may be in your system32 folder in windows as most are and may even be in your program files as well. that is why you should find where they all are first then start up in safe mode and delete them. take note of the date it was created and do a search for files modified on that date. if you try to do this in normal running mode it will not allow it as they will be running processes.
sounds scary!!!! just get an anti virus and run it in safe mode, avg should work.
i dont expect you to do this all but it will help you if it happens again before it gets too far in your system. :chin:

I've jus identified the virus after a dvd scan with AVG. The virus name is I-Worm/VB.FZ.

Now what can i do?

Why not just pop your disc into your machine and then scan it with an anti-virus software.........go, here h**p://free.grisoft.com/ and d/l the free version of AVG..........this is a superb stand-a-alone anti-virus software..................it has the smallest footprint of anything else on the market and I CAN TELL YOU FOR FACT it has a higher detection rate than Norton.......I have used Norton from day one..................but, i dumped it when i transferred my files to my new machine. I run it on Vista too.
I use the corporate version of AVG at my office................and it updates itself almost every other day.

Been using Avast! for a couple of years now without incident. Why dont u think it's a "good" AV program?

AVG antivirus is free and good

I don't have yet a "good" AV software, i'm running at the moment avast! because it was the only software i had at home. I still need to install a good one.

I think i'll do 1st a virus scan on the dvd's and then i'll check if the AV can delete the virus after the transfer to the HD.
And i'll check the virus name and family as soon as i get home.

not an expert, but would probably help if I knew what virus it was. What anti-virus program are you using?
