Platoon needs a stout compression, I backed it up myself not long ago. Simple transcoders like Shrink just don't work very well when you compress much more than 20% and use a big screen. If you want to try a nice free program to compress bigger movies, I suggest DVD-Rebuilder. I personally use the Pro version because I like the complete 1 click methood, which encodes, converts to .iso, and burns using IMG Burn or DVD Decypter.
Here is a great tutorial on using an all freeware encoder. Unlike the tutorial I listed I personally use DVDShrink (with "no compression" setting selected to rip the entire film for compression) with AnyDVD running in the background to rip and strip. IMO it is worth it to purchase the DVD-RB Pro package and at least CCE Basic (Cinema Craft Encoder). I use CCE SP 2.7, but that is some large cash. HCEenc which comes in the free DVD-RB is a perfectly fine program. This will take a few hours to encode, but the quality is worth it.
Other times, the media quality can affect the picture, but typically they display colored pixelations. I started using cheap media which worked fine for my smaller TV, but when it went in my 53" or projector, it looked like crap. I suggest buying and using only high quality media. I prefer Taiyo Yuden (which by many accounts is "the best"), but Verbatim is also among the "highest quality" media preferred by rabid enthusiasts. Both are available at
Supermediastore and at
RIMA. Sorry, I realized you are in the UK, and looked for a source that was reccomended for those in the UK.
Here are the Taiyo Yudens in a store based in the UK, and
here are the Verbs.Hope this helps.
