When using the crop tool, you can select Content-Aware to have Photoshop attempt to fill in areas outside of the image bounds. This can be useful for making background images wider.
Select the Crop Tool © and draw your selection. Make sure Content-Aware is selected.
Drag the crop box outside the original image, to the desired width.

Hit Enter and photoshop will do it's best to fill the image

It probably won't be perfect, but now it makes it easier so you can clone in any unnatural looking areas.
