I did not know that one neither.
I use vertical and horizontal rulers.
But i will use that one now that i'm aware :D

When using guides you can hold the Alt key to change the orientation of the guide you're dragging out. For example if you drag a guide from the top you can change the guide from horizontal to vertical by holding the Alt key.
