ctbaulbee - Thanks for the info! All this time I was never aware of a compression setting. All the covers I've printed over the years have been great quality, so I never questioned any settings. I did find the setting after a few minutes of looking. The default setting was 20. I was curious and changed it to lowest setting and re-saved it. The file size did jump up to 6.63MB. So, I guess for WIP purposes, I will leave it at default setting or I won't be able to post in forum.

Again, thanks for all the help! Learn something new every day!

Here's is what I think it is looking at your King Kong post.

The image looks like it has been over compressed when it was saved, like the compression is set to high, that makes images smaller.

When the site added a water mark it re-saved the image at 100% in order to not introduce compression artifacts into the image.

In your case this results in a bigger image, in most cases, where the original file was saved at 95-100% quality it would not do that or it would get smaller in many cases as the server here has a more efficient compression system compared to Photoshop and other graphics programs.

The rub is making it bigger (after the fact) does not make it better as the damage was done when you saved it at the high compression rate to start with and that can not be corrected on re-saving.

The average size for cover should be 3-5 megs unless it's mostly one color then it might be less, the normal at 100% quality runs about 6-8 megs on here.

Long story short you should look at your jpg compression setting as you are hurting the quality of your image by having it set so high.

:)

Thanks! That helped! I find it odd that a watermark would triple the size of a file. I know I'm a newbie and feel like an idiot when I cannot do the simple things!

When the watermark is added the file might get larger depending on what the image content is, in most cases they get smaller for me anyway.

I can give you a few more bytes to work with, try it now.

:D

I just tried uploading to WIP but had problem. The image is only 1.21MB. But when it it uploaded as attachment, it said successful but also read "Attachment Space Used 3.35MB of 2.93MB". I tried adding another but then it failed. Out of curiosity, I tried attaching it here and in a reply in another thread, and it did show proper size. Tried a reply in WIP area and it was larger. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks! Most of my finished covers are uploaded. Some I doubt I ever will, as they are sets that I downloaded and changed the spines. It's not fair to submit something that is not mine. Thought just popped in my head: I could post them in WIP and try to find out who the original creator is for them. I am those designers are on this site as well. Most of my downloaded covers are from R1DB over the years.

Most of my unfinished work is standard DVD. So just need to copy them over to the BluRay templates and get going on them.

You do not need to downsize your files for WIP. You can upload full sized images, as WIP images are now watermarked. Also, you only need to make sure images uploaded to the gallery are 300 dpi :)

I am sure most of us have covers that we are still to complete, or may never complete. It is a pretty normal thing buddy!

Not sure about Paint Shop Pro, but the images you post in the W.I.P. section should be 300dpi, as that's the standard we're using here. You are now allowed to post full size images in the W.I.P. section so it's easier to see small details and so on. I'm not sure if that goes for all members tho, but I'm sure ct or baz could clear that up.
PS: you can check out the different sizes for covers here:
