Evenly lit characters are less dramatic in print as they are in film, especially for action movies. Instead of using level, curves, etc. to add shadow, I found the effect could be achieved by manually painting in shadow.
Steps:
1. Color-pick dark crease shadow
2. Paint in show inside faint, existing shadow
3. Follow contours of face and body to make shadow feel natural

The key to selling this is to make the change global - search for all of the shadows being lit/filled in with the fill light and paint in shadow. For example, I painted all over Scaramanga's shirt to match the new lighting for his face:
