It's mostly just playing with the layer masks, finding out where things fit together and being strategic about what blends where. Generally, you would smoothly blend the layer and then strategically go back and unmask pieces, like Laurence Olivier's hat on the right, for instance.

I'm still figuring out how to colorize well, but the one tip I've found so far is to make sure you treat it as only one step in the larger design process.
