Yup - sans serif is the french word for a grotesque font.

There are fonts out there with the same proportions, like Alternate Gothic No. 2 or the free League Gothic. And there are fonts out there with the handwritten styling, like B-Movie Retro. But I haven't seen a font combining the two yet.

Drawing your own text would be a great approach. Or, you can look through posters from the '30s and '40s to piece something together.

For instance, I made this a while back, pretty close to the above:

Did my best to focus on the typography (importing the image in photoshop and drawing a moustache on her face seemed to do the trick :D ) and like Janne says, it looks like it's handmade.
