Ok lets hope i explain this well. My covers background is black with angled streaks of grey, kinda like sin cits rain but not as prominent, know i have a new layer above my background which i want to fade from pic at the top in transparent at the bottom so that it blends into the background nicely, iv tried the gradient from black into transparent and putting the black at the bottom but because my background isnt 100% black it still show a sharp edge, iv also tried eraser with feather but doesnt give the desired effect.

can anyone help pls

thanks in advance (IMG:style_emoticons/default/thumb.gif)

Try making the background 100% black and see if that works... but post a preview of the image so its easier to understand.
