its a question of trial and error to see what works best, and in what combination
moire reduction / a little edge preserving (smart blur) / despeckle / salt&pepper filter / median filter / gaussian blur / add noise

I was thinking about a different route - going "artistic". Instead of trying to clean up a poor image to make it look like a good photograph, make it look like a drawing, or etching, or painting, or....

Now I am not a master of this area myself, but maybe someone else can chime in with some other ideas. I have seen some great covers on this site that would be better examples of what I had in mind.

This is what I did with the image below: I cut out Gary, then duplicated it. I applied a Colored Pencil filer to one, then a Cutout filter the other. I set the top layer (Cutout) to 33% opacity, then merged the layers.

I was thinking that you would probably want to do some other artistic filter on the background, because when I did them as one, I did not like the results.

thx for that guys i appreciate the input. i lreally like the like the ideas you came up with worth doing and looking into. I also had another idea myself but unsure if it would work. If i could a find a program or maybe if photoshop cs3 could do it is it possible to get a good quality still off the dvd itself. If so what is the best way to do this ?

power dvd is one i use, but obviously your limited by the quality of the images to begin with, even with really good quality film your limited to the size you can blow them up to (alien skin blow ups good for increasing image size in CS)

Which alien skin plug-in helps with resizing. I have several AS plugins, but since I'm still semi-new to covers, I haven't figured out how to use them all yet.

But what do I know?
