I keep seeing custom sets using spanning spines? how do they do this? How do they create the spines so that they all line up and spell words, or create images? I'm just amazed at some of the things I've seen recently....

Is there some software that allows you to work on them all at the sametime? Is it done in PS?

I always use PS, and make a sperate image for the spines, then move them across to the cover. IF you group each spine in the seperate image, all you have to do is drag the group across, and line it up.

So do you have a PSD file already set up with several empty spines? Or do you have one PSD with one spine? I'm still a little confused?

Several empty spines in one file. Here is an example of a blank template.

I understand now....thanks....I'm going to keep that temp....even though I'm not sure I'll ever use it. But you never know I may get daring enough, to create a custom set like that when I learn the art of covers a little more....thanks again

How were you able to put the PSD file in a link? Do you already have it somewhere online, or is there a way for me to just choose something from my pc to put in a link?

Sorry for all my questions.......you must get annoyed with me, or you soon will......haha

I uploaded it to webspace - you can link certain files, that are relatively small, using the 'add attachment' below the add reply window

ok thanks....wasn't sure if the add attachment worked. I remember reading somewhere maybe not even this site, to not use attachments because some users couldn't see/open them....

Why to use a template if each spanning spine depends on the number of covers?
If you have 5 covers to make a spanning spine, get the image you want in the FINAL. 5 covers is 170pixels x 5 = 850 pixels.
Make the image you want in the spanning spine 850pixels x 2175 pixels and divide it into 5. Each cover will have onf of this 5 images...
If you want 8 covers, is 8 x 170 = 1360 pixels.
This is for a single amaray cover ( spine = 170 )
If you'll use another cover size, just change 170 for the spine size in the simple equation...

You probably don't need anymore, but it's simple:
Make all I wrote, until you have your image with ____px x 2175px
____ is= case spine size x number of covers of the serie

Then, go to
View / New Guide

Put 170px ( or spine size of the case ) but do not forget px ( because cm is default, and we need pixels )

Go to View / New guide again, and put
340px ( 170 + 170 )

Go to vies / New Guide, and put
510px ( 170 + 170 + 170 )

Make this until you fill all image with number of spines you need - and you planned when you set your image at the right size.

Just select spine by spine, copy and paste in your cover. Make them visible when you have the related cover for that spine

Hmmm - I find that no one has taken into consideration, that the spines will lose some of the spanning spine pic, if not you use this overlap method. I know that some ppl use 5 pixels, others 10, so this tut is with what I use, namely 7 pixels overlap for each spine.

If you need further help, just ask (IMG:style_emoticons/default/8834.gif)
