I know this isn't terribly good, but I am messing with alot of little tricks I have picked up. I am really trying to get the burnt edge effect down pat, and I thought it went nice with the flaming AIC emblem on the front. I also wanted to float the pictures, and I elected to float them over a flame colored base, with some shadowing just to mess with some more ideas. I don't think I like the flame colored base much, but I'd like some opinions. I have saved several layers of this project, as well as all the images I manipulated, so going back and changing things is no big deal, like I said, I wanted to mess with some new ideas so this is really just a show of some of them. I am hoping with some advice I might clean this up into a sweet cover filled with some somwhat challenging little effects in it.

Thanks in advance for looking at it, and giving some hints and suggestions.

Thanks:

I love the title treatment, it looks very nice, but I think it could be positioned a little lower, I'd also leave the MTV unplugged logo's in a flat, smaller and moved to the bottom of the fron cover.

The burnt effect on the back images is OK but could you try it with the same effect as the title treatment around the edges, Alternatively you could try using a corners brush set (A little trick bazzah taught me) there are some really nice brush sets at www.deviantart.com.

Hope this helps.

Yeah, I wasn't sure about the fiber texture on the logo. I wanted to make it somewhat less pronounced, and in fact I set it on one attempt as an embossed logo, and it looked fair. I was thinking of shrinking it a bit too.

So you think work the flames around the pictures in place of the drop? I thought about adding flames to the back, but thought I might be overdoing it. I will look into some brush effects as well. Could you list some favorites?

Also, I am not sure about the title set on the... nice lady (IMG:http://www.hirescovers.net/forum/style_emoticons/default/winking.gif) . I have thought about enlarging it, and centering it... Maybe surrounding it with 4 band pictures to even my odds... But I was afraid I might overly obscure the image, which is something I want to keep intact.

With a cover like this it's a perfect opportunity to experiment, since it's not a movie there's far less pre-conceptions as to what needs to be included and where ot how it should look. With the edges of the picktures on the back I'd reccommend using same effect you used on the actual title text perhpas with a smaller version of the flames just licking around them.

Or what about this?

(IMG:http://img3.glowfoto.com/images/2006/09/19-2039418394T.jpg)

I wanted to make the title-set (and eye candy) bigger, so I moved it to center, and enlarged it a bit. However, this left a big chunk of dead space in my top left corner I elected to fill with band member names, and location/date of filming.

Also, I elected to attempt the flame effect like Skallywag mentioned, and I moved my MTV logo to the bottom. With this move, however, I still felt compelled to leave the unplugged tag at title level. I wanted the random feel of placement to continue, so I canted it to one side. I felt like the flat logo seemed too dull though, I sank it and softened the lighting relief.

I am not too sure how I feel about this cover yet. I think it looks better then it did before, but...

looks really good, bit i prefer the top one without the chains, and (IMO) think you have over-sized the back slightly, leave the info at the bottom in more empty space like the band members.at he moment you have the writing over the dudes face.

You know, I liked the title set being bigger, personally. The reason being that I can read the text better.

However, I know what you mean about text over Layne Staley's face. Ironically, the text covering Layne's face states "In loving memory of Layne Staley August 22, 1967-Arpil 5, 2002". This was his last full concert... He did do a couple special appearances, but by this point his addiction had really surpassed his ability to do much of anything anymore. Also, and rather surprisingly, it was a very powerful performance and aside from his eyes and forgetting the lyrics once you would believe he was a young kid with a powerful and unique voice with years of strong vocal performances left in him... Anyways, back to the cover, I think I will take your advice and rework it a bit to clean this text issue up.

For the compliments and constructive criticism I thank you all. For the brushes I must again thank Skallywag personally.

Also, one last question. I know MrHenryDog didn't like the chains, but Skallywag did. So I would like a small show of hands (if I may be so bold as to ask) as to which you prefer for my final product to be posted in the gallery, No chains, one chain, or both chains?

Edit, here are all 3 versions with the text fixed (sorry MrHenryDog, but I opted to maintain the size of the titleset, which actually printed out very well) and it was really done through manipulation of picture location.
