I'm not overly bothered if anyone leaves a comment or not, but if you were to make it so they have to, be prepared for a load of, "Ta's" & "ty's", and any other two amd three letter forms of thankyou.
Been having a think, and while browsing the gallery I was reading the last comments, as you do, I think if your gonna make leaving a comment compulsory then I feel the comments should be in English, as the forums are english only, it would make sense in my mind to have the gallery follow suit, I know we allow non english covers, which is fine, but when your viewing an English cover and someone has left a non-English reply like "Bedankt voor deze upload !!!!!" what does that mean.

I'm with Corky on this one. IMHO I don't think it will do any good to force comments. If you force the issue, you won't get honest/true comments anyway. It doesn't really bother me if someone chooses not to comment.
The key to faking out the parents is the clammy hands. It's a good non-specific symptom; I'm a big believer in it. A lot of people will tell you that a good phony fever is a dead lock, but, uh... you get a nervous mother, you could wind up in a doctor's office. That's worse than school. You fake a stomach cramp, and when you're bent over, moaning and wailing, you lick your palms. It's a little childish and stupid, but then, so is high school.

Personally, I like getting thanked for a cover. Were not getting paid, so a short thanks won't kill anyone.
I understand your view on this, and agree a thanks is nice, but I make my covers first and foremost for my son and I. I generally up my covers because it makes my son think I'm famous, and the look on his face to another one of my cover's on the site is all the thanks I need. It's not a job at the end of the day it's a hobby, and it's fun, and if someone wants one of my covers then that's fantastic, but if not no worries, there's plenty to choose from. But having said that, if I've done something for someone else, then a thanks is a must imo., if you've filled a request or made something or even helped somebody achieve something for someone the least they can do is thank you for it. but I dont necessary feel making people leave a comment in the gallery is the way to go. Your right you don't get paid for it, but the enjoyment of making it imo is payment enough.

I could care less about comments. It's nice to get them but I prefer honest criticism over ass kissing bull. I don't think forcing someone to comment will make anything better. I tend to echo corky's comments minus the son. I do this for myself as a hobby and post here because I feel someone else may be able to use what I've done. Or at the least modify it to their own needs.
whilst I agree with Corky, I do this as a hobby and because I enjoy making the covers, I do think that leaving they should leave a comment.
I agree with Donger that I hate the ass kissing bull that does happen and I tend not to comment if I really don't like a cover...but then if they don't like them they won't download them and then they won't need to leave a comment will they!
Just a thank you is fine by me, as irrob said..its nice to be thanked.
