Is there a free plug-in for PS that can make extracting an image easier. I recently saw a program plug-in that was $150 or so that made it simple to extract an image (no tracing then erasing if needed).

For high resolution images, I use the Magic Wand to remove most of the larger segements of the background, then it's heavy magnification and a small to medium sized eraser depending on the detail of the image to be extracted...hair is usually the MOST difficult part of an image. After I remove all of the background I can see, I apply a stroke (usually a beefy one) to see if there are any stray pixels and I clean them up with the Eraser. Using a Quick Mask to define a path around the image you wish to extract is another way to do this that is essentially the same. Flip in and out of the Quick Mask to see how your pathway is shaping up. Adjusting Levels and looking at the different Channels can give you more solid colors so the Magic Wand can remove large portions of the background for you.

No need to pay for an expensive plugin, that may or may not work, when the tools are there and all you need for the job is patience. (IMG:http://www.hirescovers.net/forum/style_emoticons/default/winking.gif)

I was just trying to ease my pain a little.....I'm a filter/extract guy myself....but sometimes, it is just so slow going I get a little annoyed then, that's when I ask these random questions.......about how can I make this less painful...thanks for all the replies.....I'll just stick with good old extract.....

I find it easier and more precise to make a path around the think I want to cut out using the pen tool, but it is time consuming if you have fine detail like hair to cut around.

I can say that after "testing" this plugin out it can be useful. It finds the edges of objects in the pic and essentially auto selects them. Then you can click within the edge and have that whole section deleted. Imagine a suped up version of the magic wand in PS. You can change the sensitivity and everything to find more or fewer edges. It opens up into basicly a different program. PS minimizes and up comes this sort of mini PS program with just the tools uesd in the plugin.

I can say this though,if you don't have a semi powerful PC you can bet on waiting for it to do some things. Changing and applying some settings can take quite a while.
