Impossible, could be 10 films in each category.. - animations, drama, scifi etc.
My animated all time fav is Prince Of Egypt.
Most remembered: King Kong, 1933 version.
Most laughs: Dumb and Dumber. Hilarious.
Action: T2...?
Adventure: LOTR trilogy, without competition.
ah, no I'm not sure about the rest..

I would think it is virtually impossible to have a single favorite movie. I have several films that are all time faves, all of which are considered classic or groundbreaking.

Godfather I & II
Silence of the Lambs
The Matrix
LOTR trilogy
Patton
Platoon
Gladiator
and I could go on...

Too hard to narrow down to one movie. So many come to mind when I think of the best film that I like:

Dune
Serenity
Saving Private Ryan
LOTR Trilogy
Matrix Trilogy
The Fifth Element
Forrest Gump
Van Wilder

and the list goes on...
