So I bought a 4TB hard drive, and I have been burning ALL 1200 DVDs / Blurays to my PC. I stream them anywhere I'm at (Home or across the country) with an AMAZING program called PLEX. What I love about PLEX is that is shows off the Posters, and you can change them too. It's truly amazing...

So why I said I kind of went digital is because I still buy all my movies physical media and claim them on Vudu and then rip to Plex.

My next question, can we just design custom posters for movies instead of the whole cover? Or do we need the whole Bluray cover?

I'll let Bazzah answer that but I think that it's a great suggestion and it will be a great asset for the resource gallery.

Of course you can design posters and upload them to the gallery, they will make amazing assets (as long as you are OK with other members using them to make covers). But for contributor status you would need to create full covers (IMG:style_emoticons/default/8834.gif) It would be in the interest of other members for you to create covers, so they can use your great artwork!

I'll probably do the covers. That way I can replace my boring retail ones..

Plex is a great piece of software, I've been doing the exact same thing for a while now and the thing I love about it is that there's apps for your phone and tablets (IMG:style_emoticons/default/8834.gif)

Yeah it's sweet. I actually found a few of my covers as poster selections on the Bourne movies. I don't use them, as those covers I made so so so many years ago SUCK. But I just thought it was cool to see them randomly there.

Suaron how does Plex work with streaming? I've always wanted to play my videos from my pc to my TV but the streaming always lags.

Does Plex work that way?

Nope no lag at all! I have sometimes had multiple people watching different things on Plex and it handles it great! Obviously your internet connection has to be decent.

The great thing with Plex is sometimes it tells you your connection isn't that great (could be when the internet is at it's busiest time) and you can then select to stream it at a lower quality, for example if you are streaming at the original quality which is 1080p 5.1 you can then put it down to something like 720p 4mbps.

Definitely recommend it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/8834.gif)

For what you want to do is quite easy without plex.
All late model BR players have a USB port and are capable of playing video content from a portable HD.**
I have recent models of both Samsung and Sony BR players and both work well on 99% of my video through the USB port.**

**Although the player will play anything in the tray the software for playing media through the USB port is a bit finicky. This may be by design.
Both players hate most .AVI format.
Some .MKV format problems, depending on sound encoding.
Both love MP4.
Neither will recognize a portable HD over 2TB.

All problems can be solved re-encoding in HandBrake or AnyVideoConverter to .MP4, AAC2.

Tbf, that's a lot more work and I wouldn't call it easy (especially if you don't have any clue about different codecs, bitrate, etc.). This is just a guess tho, but doesn't that limit you to use FAT32 formatted USB's which have the limit of 4gb max size per file? At least that's how it is on PS. The easiest way would ofc be to use an HDMI cable from you PC to your TV (assuming you have HDMI outputs).

No, you can use the Fat ex or whatever it's called.. I have a few files at 6gb. Like Avatar and what not. Mostly I keep my bluray rips at 720p 4gb size and DVD at 480x720 at 2.5gb size.
