It's hard to get free time but I whipped this up using 3d text for the first time.

To do:
- shadows of characters
- cut out characters
- do some paint over work to remove some self shadowing on TT

Thoughts? 8834.gif

Very cool, Paris!

It looks like a classic opening credits title treatment, with the power to carry a cover! cheers.gif

What program did you use for the 3d?

Maybe gray for the Criterion branding elements?
Maybe a little more light overlaid on the woman (particularly around her arm), just to have her jump out a bit more?
Maybe move the whole thing up a tiny bit so that the space above "Robert Donat" equals the space below "Steps"?
Maybe slightly smaller on the "in" text?

This already has the look of a great Criterion design!

Ty both!

I used Maya + Renderman! (But the same can be done with Blender and Renderman, both are free 8834.gif )

Process:
- converted the title treatment to a work path
- exported the work path as an .ai file
- imported the .ai file into Maya
- turned the imported curves into mesh by using "bevel plus"
- shaded the mesh with a chrome look with a Renderman shader (That's how "39" reflects on the text right below it 8834.gif )
- Lit the scene with 2 lights

Update!

added:
- bunny's suggestions
- shadows
- some evening out of lighting on the text

To do:
- A lot of lighting to do to make Madeline look more 3d
- add dark texturing to her screen right hair to have it pop over the white text
- painting in more of shoes, painting reflections on black shoes to make them pop

It should be center, but the criterion elements make it feel off haha

There's something really special in type-oriented artworks (and I'm not talking about these bland type-over-face teaser posters that some movies rely on in recent years). The texture and the proper reflection among the letters give a true 3D and depth feeling.

At first sight, the vertical text on the left can be interpreted as the spine of the cover, thus looking like the whole artwork is off center.

Noted a typo on the actor's name: Robert Donat

Actually, I think bending the rules of centering may work. Funny how that works out
